INT. MBCI MAC LAB – DAY

Shea sits down in the MBCI Mac Lab and writes her first blog for the 2023 Studio year.

SHEA MILLER

I’m a grade 11 student here at MBCI. My goals for the 2023 studio program is to have multiple pieces of media that grow my knowledge and talent of storytelling. I plan on building a portfolio of my work so I can peruse my future as a filmmaker and turn my dreams into my reality.

My Struggles

My biggest struggle so far is keeping my imagination tamed. When I think of a worthy idea for a film I often obsess about it, think way too out of the box, realize the execution is extremely difficult and time consuming, scrap the idea and start from scratch.

I have been through this process multiple times this semester and I have struggled with my perfectionism and need to hold myself to a higher standard. I waned my first short film to reflect my personality and studio experience. Ultimately it was through my struggles that I found a new and improved concept for a film.

Short Film

A boy who finds himself stuck in a loop of a loved ones death. He must do everything in his power to save her before the loop runs out and her death becomes a reality.

For my proof of concept presentation I filmed the first loop routine for a now old concept for my short film. After a full day of filming I was left with roughly 5 min of end product. By getting familiar and comfortable with the old set and environment of the film it helped me keep on track and create a more detailed shot list so I can create a strict film schedule. Now I must become familiar with the new set location so my film can have amazing composition.

Music Video

I have an extremely versatile taste in music and I was really struggling to pick the perfect song that would showcase a relatable story for teenagers. Tiny Vessels by Death Cab For Cutie was introduced to me by my teacher and film mentor Mr. K. When I listened to this song for the first time I knew I found my story. My goal with this music video is to create an on screen romance with a modern relationship twist.

Where I’m Currently At

Now that I have casted my main characters for both my short film and music video and set film dates I am filming practice shots and composing short videos so I can master my editing skills for my Big Picture Goals.

We have roughly 8 weeks left in studio and once I finish the filming process I have limited time with editing, so I must be familiar with uncharted territory’s such as color editing. My film editing can make or break the vibe of my films. Examples of this work is filming social media promotional videos for my classmates businesses.

Feel free to check out the rest of my journey and progress in future posts! 🙂

Stay tuned! There's more to come...
