My name is Kate, and I’m a grade 11 student pursuing historical writing. This semester, I plan the use the STUDIO to write a novel.
A historical fiction placed in 480 BC, my novel will follow The battle of Thermopylae and day to day ancient Greek life. Writing always made sense to me. Being able to express emotion through is what I love about it, and I’m so excited about this program and my project, writing a novel.
Starting My Novel
I started by gathering inspiration through the books I’d already read. I made a massive collage of my favourite books, images and quotes I saw potential in, anywhere from Pirates and thieves to warriors and kings.
Through a very long process, I narrowed my choices down to ancient romans in Pompeii, or the ancient Greeks and the battle of Thermopylae.
It took a couple weeks, but I finally chose, and plunged headfirst into my research about the ancient Greeks, brainstorming wild ideas for my novel.
I’ve Written 3 Chapters So Far
A historical fiction, based around the historical events of Thermopylae, the story follows both a young playwright and seasoned warrior living in Sparta. Filled with battle, politics, traditional Greek festivals and customs, this book broadens your knowledge on the ancient Greeks while immersing you in the stories of two people at the time.
Running priests chased by warriors holding bunches of grapes, uprising against the nobles, and defying the word of the Gods to protect Greece, I have many plans for the contents of this novel, all relevant and accurate to the customs of the time.
I’ve introduced 3 main characters, Calista, a politicians daughter pursuing playwriting, Orion, a well-oiled warrior who’d much rather paint, and Pleistarchus, Heir to throne of Sparta.
As I write, the process gets increasingly difficult, and I found this Greek proverb that related well to my situation.
