What Is A Guitar?
Such a simple question would seem to have a simple answer; the dictionary definition describes it as “a stringed musical instrument, with a fretted fingerboard, typically incurved sides, and six or twelve strings, played by plucking or strumming with the fingers or a plectrum.” While this definition may be serviceable for a utilitarian purpose, a guitarist would find this lacking. A guitar is more than just an instrument, it’s an extension of the self; a window into the mind and soul of the person playing the aforementioned instrument.
It doesn’t stop there, however. Simply put, all guitars have a unique voice and no two will ever sound identical. This means that every guitar supplies a different filter for a guitarist to pour their heart into. This is why for my studio project I decided to build a guitar, because building a guitar allows the person to make the guitar sound exactly how they want it to, and make the instrument be even more representative of the creativity that music produces.
So, this is why I chose to build an electric guitar for my Studio project.
My Studio Project
I am going to be building an electric guitar during my time in Studio, though that is not all. I will also be recording an EP featuring original instrumental pieces written and produced by myself. These songs will be performed on the guitar I’m building.
The first track will be a blast from the past: a rockabilly tune heavily inspired by players such as Darrel Higham and featuring many aspects of blues players like SRV and B.B. King.
The second track will be a jazz/math-rock infused experience drawing on techniques and tones from the likes of Eric Johnson and Nick Reinhart.
The third track will be a bombastic leap forward into the age of Eddie van Halen and 80’s shred guitar.
Lastly the final track will be a cumulative effort featuring aspects of all my inspirations, the main three being Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai and Roger fisher.
So, just as any guitar should be before an epic performance, I encourage you to stay tuned.
